Cheap Motor Scooters
Like pocket bikes, Cheap Motor Scooters have enjoyed a rise in popularity due to their price and the need for
people to find cheaper and more efficient transport. If you are on the lookout for a cheap motor scooter no doubt
you would have seen advertisements for Scooters that sell for only a few hundred dollars. Sounds too good to be
true doesn’t it? Although these scooters may seem like an attractive proposition you need to keep in mind that
cheaper is not always better!
For more years than I care to remember I have been assembling and repairing imported scooters, pocket bikes and
full size motorbikes and I can tell you that there is a vast difference in the build quality and materials used in
the cheaper bikes compared to the name brand bikes. Naturally there is a vast difference in price also
and for many people the cheaper scooters are enough for the job but a few key considerations need to be kept
in mind.
Firstly, you are only paying the low prices for a reason. The cheap scooters are usually mass-manufactured in
places like China and obviously the materials and labour costs are kept to a minimum. The differences can even be
seen in things like the wiring loom for example, the crimp-on fittings are usually quite weak and the wiring
itself is the bare minimum that can carry the necessary voltage.
Components such as the chain and sprockets for example can be prone to wearing very quickly and although
most of the actual engines that I have seen have been of reasonable quality there has been the odd occasion when
we had an engine that was lacking performance-wise compared to the others. This discrepancy probably came
about from the fact that they are mass manufactured and not all are tested before being shipped out.
All of this may make you think I am against buying a Cheap Motor Scooter, well nothing could be further from the
truth. They can give you hours and hours of faultless performance at a really good price but it must be kept in
mind that the chances of having problems with it are higher than with a dearer Scooter. Which brings me to
availability of spare parts.
If the retailer of your chosen Scooter cannot supply spare parts I would be back on the hunt for
someone that can either supply spare parts and/or service for reasonable prices. The joy of buying a Scooter
for a rock-bottom price can be soon soured by a breakdown and no-one around being able to supply parts or
fix the damn thing!
Also the warranty period is something else you should consider. If the retailer is not willing to offer you a
reasonable warranty period with good coverage then chances are the product is not as good as they make out. One
such retailer that I briefly did work for got to the point where he would no longer offer any type of
warranty on the bikes and scooters that he was selling and there was a reason for this – they were absolute
rubbish! Needless to say he is no longer in business.
So as long as you do your homework and not rush out and make an impulse buy you should be able to find a
Cheap Motor Scooter that both fits your budget and purpose AND has the spare parts and service in place to back you
up on case you need it.
